Five trends to understand the transformation of packaging

The exhibition focuses on five major sustainable trends, illustrated by real packaging, material innovations and concrete solutions from Prod&Pack exhibitors.

Attractiveness & Practicality

Packaging is the physical appearance of the product and its primary spokesperson. Its aesthetics are crucial for it to stand out on the shelves, differentiate itself from the competition, and attract buyers. Packaging is also a ‘tool’ at the service of the consumer/user. It must be practical. Consumers therefore favour easy opening and closing systems, dosage aids, good grip, etc.

Recyclable & Recycled

Recyclable packaging, in an operational recycling system, is no longer an option. By 2030, non-recyclable packaging will be banned from the European market. The incorporation of recycled material is also a requirement in certain markets, such as plastic bottles, for which targets have been set. Even without regulatory constraints, many types of packaging already incorporate recycled content.

Reuse & Recycling

Reuse refers to packaging that has been designed and placed on the market to be able to make several trips or rotations by being refilled or reused for the same purpose for which it was designed. Reuse refers to packaging being used for a completely different purpose, such as becoming a pencil pot, a vase or any other personal use: this is similar to recycling, known as ‘upcycling’.

Anti-waste & Restitution

On average, packaging accounts for only 8 to 10% of a finished product's environmental impact. The largest part of this impact comes from the content itself. Packaging is therefore an anti-waste tool when its features provide better protection and preservation of its contents, but also when it allows the entire contents to be used up without overuse.

Reduction & Substitution

Since European Directive 92/62/EC, reducing the weight of all packaging has been an obligation that has been continuously implemented in order to preserve natural resources and reduce waste production. With the aim of reducing plastic pollution, regulations now set reduction targets for single-use plastic packaging. This is leading to a shift towards other materials.
